Employee Spotlight – Tina Murray
I’m originally from Williamsville, New York, which is right outside of Buffalo. When I was a few months old, a blizzard hit our town and it took my dad three days to get home from work. This prompted our family to move to West Palm Beach, FL the following year. A year after we arrived in South Florida, our family faced Hurricane David which was one of the strongest hurricanes ever recorded. While we may have ran away from a blizzard, the hurricane didn’t scare us off! So long story short, I consider myself to be a Palm Beach County Native since I only remember living here!
How did you get started with Decorators Unlimited?
I started working in the Interior Design Industry in 2003, but with a different firm. I knew nothing about furniture…at all. (laughs) I figured out that I loved the industry, however the company I worked for there seemed to be a fire drill every day. It was very chaotic and poorly managed. I knew about Decorators Unlimited and had a friend that worked here. I ran into my friend one day and she told me that DU was hiring. So, I made a phone call, came in that same day for an interview, was offered the job during the interview and as they say the rest is history!
How long have you been on the DU team?
15 and a half years can you believe it! I think that we have a great group of people working here at DU. We all work well together, everyone has their own strengths that they bring in, but I think the one common denominator that everyone has is that real “Type A” driven personality to really push yourself to be successful in everything you do. We have a really hardworking and loyal staff, and I think that’s why people work here for so long. There is a comradery here that is hard to find.
What are some changes you’ve seen over the years?
Oh, geeze. I’ve seen a lot of changes. (laughs) When I started working here everyone used to send faxes and we would send proposals to clients via FedEx. Technology has been the biggest change throughout the time that I’ve worked here. We do so many things electronically now that were previously done manually. We can Facetime a client when we are in their home to show them progress in real time, or even to review fabrics or other material selections. We’re able to work so much more efficiently with the tools we have today and it is definitely less painful to get a project completed.
What is your favorite Project (s) that Decorators has done?
So, because I am not an Interior Designer working directly on projects, I don’t necessarily have a favorite. I am, however, heavily involved in the logistics side of the business. So, while I might not have a favorite project, I do have a favorite part of the process which is figuring out how to install 150 projects over the course of a year. Each project has its own unique set of challenges and I think that is why it is my favorite part. In addition to working throughout the United States, we handle a large volume of International projects with the furthest one away being located in St. Petersburg, Russia. Every country we work in requires researching the country’s specific requirements for importing furnishings, creating a detailed plan of the logistics involved and handling the various hurdles that always seem to pop up. This is sometimes what I joke is the “Unlimited” part of Decorators Unlimited. (laughs) This part of the process requires a lot of research and working/collaborating with many different people. It may be the most challenging part of the process, but to me that’s what makes it the most fun. You’re forced to think outside of the box, each project has its own “DNA”, and you’re never bored! In the end it all comes together like a symphony, and it’s rewarding to be a part of making it all happen.
What is your favorite Design Style?
I don’t know that I have a favorite style, but I would say that I lean more towards a cleaner, lighter look.
Where do you gain inspiration from?
My inspiration comes from the people that I work with, my family and my friends. I am energized by my relationships. I know that’s a little different of an answer, but that’s where my inspiration comes from.
What is one thing your dream home MUST have?
A dream home for me would definitely be on the ocean. It would have to have a fabulous outdoor living area where you could both relax and entertain. I would love for it to be in South Florida, but without the heat and humidity if that were able to happen. (laughs)
What’s it like working for DU?
It’s unlike any other place that I have ever worked. There is such a great mix of people, it is extremely fast paced and no two days are ever the same. You will never get bored here, and I often tell people that “this place is a time warp” because each day goes by so quickly.
What do you love the most about working with DU?
Definitely the people that I work with!
If you could share one piece of advice, what would it be?
To be successful in life you need to learn how to communicate at a very high level.
